The Crystal Sea is a family run business and is worked by the Stevens family. They originate from St. Ives and have been fisherman for many generations; this is why the vessel is registered to St. Ives as ‘SS 118’, which is an old family registration number, although she now works out of Newlyn. She is a 20meter trawler working in the southwestern approaches where the Atlantic Ocean meets the rugged Cornish coast. Skippered by two brothers, David and Alec Stevens, with a crew of three others and their father helping ashore with the nets and supplies. The Crystal Sea goes to sea for 3-5days depending on the weather, as to maximise the quality and freshness of their catch.
The Rose of Sharon II FR 23, which was built by my grandfather Ernest Stevens in 1969 at Forbes boatyard Sandhaven near Fraserbrough in Scotland. This was the secound vessel that my grandfather built , the first being also named Rose of Sharon SS 118 which was built in 1965. My dad started working with his dad in 1965 aboard the first Rose of Sharon and he went on to work the secound Rose Of Sharon with his brother Paul not long after she was built, when my granfather became ill.
She recently visited Newlyn as a house boat, I am glad to say she hasn't changed much in appearence at all, apart from the hatch on deck to go down into the fishroom, which is now a livingroom. She still has the original 320hp Kelvin engine. I have been kindly lent some old pictures so il put more pictures on when I have converted them to digital.
